Traditional Korean Granulation: Shilla
and Gaya The above examples are gold earrings
from the Three Kingdoms Period, when ancient gold work was at its
peak in Korea (around 400–550 AD). It is presumed the earrings
were only worn by upper-class citizens and were hung by thread from
crowns or hats rather than from the ear. The forms evolved over time
from thin solid rings to thick hollow ones, and also from small and
simple designs to large ones with decorative filigree and granulation.
